While working on documenting NZ dance, I got in touch with one of Aotearoa's leading kapa haka team, Te Waka Huia. The initally granted 2-hours rehearsal access developed into a close relationship for years to come. Over the years, I travelled with the rōpū to several festivals, photographed the national Te Matatini selections and festival and was invited to many avtivities important to Te Waka Huia. Whenever possible, I visited the rōpū's wānangas at a local marae to capture their art. The trusting relationship and special footage resulting from that, lead to an exhibition featuring never disclosed 'behind the scenes footage' that was showcased in several galleries in Auckland (see exhibitions).
I feel forever grateful for the way I have been invited behind the scenes and into the whanau. A personal journey that moved me deeply and touched my heart & soul.
This gallery is an assembly of impressions captured over several years.
