COMA – for Papa

One of the works from the series COMA created for my beloved father who since his accident on 12 April 2017 exists in a locked-in syndrome. Creating this work for him during his many weeks of coma was my attempt to keep sane.

TONGA

Just returned from 7 days in the Kingdom of Tonga. Bliss Bliss Bliss. I traveled on my own and went completely off-grid to be in the moment only – that plus a healthy dose of curiosity and courage opens doors to a new culture. Unforgettable time. Visited churches and schools, met local artists and families….and swam with the majestic humpback whales. Life changing experience. Tonga felt even more untouched and authentic than most of the other pacific islands I visited. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Will be back for sure. It truly deserves the name Captain Cook gave it when first visiting in 1773 – The friendly islands. Will post more images in a little gallery soon.

PLAY ON by Paul McLaney

Excited Paul McLaney got this absolutely brilliant work recorded, the album was just released this August, congrats!  PLAY ON is a musical imagining of Shakespeare’s great soliloquies. Totally fell in love with it when I saw its first showing @ the pop-up globe in 2016. Such beautiful concept – the musicians are exquisite and the interpretations very moving. Some of them in Te Reo. The beauty of ‘come away death’ is killing me. Following Mara TK’s activities since then too, his voice is hauntingly special. Lean back, close your eyes and tune in….it’s on spotify and you can get the album via loop

So lucky to have had the chance to experience it again last night at the Town Hall. Oozing beauty, soul and sorrow. Thank you Paul McLany and all musicians for this incredible treat.

FADE @ Depot Artspace, Devonport Auckland

The story of FADE is very dear to me and I am thrilled it is treasured again, this time @ Depot Artspace Devonport, Auckland. Since it was first shown at the Sir James Wallace’s Pah Homestead in September 16, FADE has been seen by more that 30.000 visitors in three galleries – today, 22 July 17, it opens in Devonport until August 16th. My gratitude to the four galleries that gave FADE such beautiful home and chance to be seen. Here a sneak preview to its showing in lovely Devonport -  curious to get your feedback X

Exhibition shots @ Whangarei Art Museum

Today was the last day of FADE @ Whangarei Art Museum. I was up twice to visit – each time with very special people. The way the churches were showcased at WAM was very different to the first two galleries – at WAM the show was presented in a big gallery and each image had its very own big breathing space and lighting. All galleries managed to create a calm intimacy that the featured treasures represent and deserve. Very grateful for that. I will post more shots from the exhibition at WAM as soon as I receive the footage from the gallery. It’s been quite a journey for the treasures of the Hokianga. Beautiful!

Te Waka Huia rehearsal

With Te Waka Huia on the last weekend and wananga before Te Matatini 2017. Absolutely beautiful to reconnect with the whanau and to feel their powerful and warm wairua. In awe like on the first day eight years ago. Probably even more. Never ending passion and excellence xxx

One day my attraction to abandoned old places will collapse on me.

The James Wallace Arts Trust Collection

Third quarter last year, three works of the FULL MOON KINGDOM show were acquired by The James Wallace Arts Trust Collection – true honor. And one of the images already had the chance to see the beautiful Pah Homestead from the inside and dance alongside FADE for a couple of weeks. Nice!

FADE in Rawene

Very happy that FADE, my exhibition about the quaint churches of the Hokianga, arrived up North – it opened right in the heart of the Hokianga at No1 Parnell gallery in Rawene on 22 Dec 16 – the show is on until 29 Jan 17, hope lots of people will be able to check it out. Matt Elliott and I are delighted about the interest & feedback. Matt’s research about the history of all featured churches accompanies the exhibition and is published in the exhibition catalogue which was elegantly designed by Martina Steiert.

FADE in the Hokianga

IMG 8133 021 FADE in the HokiangaFor years, my then-partner Glenn Colquhoun shared his knowledge and deep love for Northland with me. To me, someone who wasn’t born in New Zealand, that is a taonga as I was introduced to that part of Aotearo and its people from the inside and the heart. Over the last couple of years, I experienced so many special places, met incredibly unique and beautiful characters and felt welcome wherever I went – I could only also fall in love with it! The many visits left deep marks on me and FADE is a result and expression of my relationship and love for that part of NZ. I wouldn’t be surprised if more stories will come out of it in the future. I have strong emotional connections to Mitimiti and Rawene and couldn’t be happier that FADE will be showcased @ No 1 Parnell gallery in Rawene from 22 December to the 29 January 2017. I have seen the historic house on the prominent corner in Rawene vacant for a couple of years, struggling to find a purpose. Linda Blincko and Lynn Lawton from the Deport Artspace in Devonport transformed the space – it has become a bright generous and central hub that supports and treasures art. It was important to me that FADE started in Auckland to raise awareness for the treasures of the Hokianga amongst ‘city people’ but I always hoped it would also be able to travel home to the heart of the Hokianga to be shared with those that live side by side and look after them. My greatest thanks to Linda and Lynn for the passionate support and making this possible.

Long live the churches of the Hokianga XX

Chris Booth’s tribute to Ralph Hotere

Last weekend was the bi-annual kutai festival in beloved Mitmiti. Loved catching-up with my Mitimiti whanau. SO much fun. All my photos go to the community (some to follow here soon). Of course I had to climp up to the urupa to visit Ralph Hotere’s grave – the unveiling just occurred on Labour day weekend. And up there in the windy sky, I had the pleasure to meet one other soul who turned out to be Ralph’s brother Moss. What an incredibly lovely encounter. Beautiful chat which ended in taking photos of each other with Ralph and Chris Booth’s most beautiful stone weaving for his friend Ralph Hotere. I felt blessed.

I will hold you close forever. My greatest inspiration and teacher xxx OUR greatest inspiration. RIP. My heart felt love and condolences to you beautiful Gerard. The earth shuddered when you left. I am lost for words.
