Chris Booth’s tribute to Ralph Hotere

Last weekend was the bi-annual kutai festival in beloved Mitmiti. Loved catching-up with my Mitimiti whanau. SO much fun. All my photos go to the community (some to follow here soon). Of course I had to climp up to the urupa to visit Ralph Hotere’s grave – the unveiling just occurred on Labour day weekend. And up there in the windy sky, I had the pleasure to meet one other soul who turned out to be Ralph’s brother Moss. What an incredibly lovely encounter. Beautiful chat which ended in taking photos of each other with Ralph and Chris Booth’s most beautiful stone weaving for his friend Ralph Hotere. I felt blessed.

Marti Friedlander

Oh dearest Marti my heart aches over today’s news. I have been dreading this announcement. I held you close all weekend while being up in Mitimiti, a place I know you always wanted to visit. I will hold you close forever. My greatest inspiration and teacher xxx OUR greatest inspiration. RIP. My heart felt love and condolences to you beautiful Gerard. The earth shuddered when you left. I am lost for words.
